Something was off about the entire situation, Charlie was sure of it then more than ever. Never had they sent a Charmer after a human, immediately followed by a Destroyer of Souls. It was overkill, considering the Charmer would have done the job just as effectively. Whatever was causing them to go to such extremes, he was certain it had something to do with Justice’s ability to withstand his abilities.

There was something very different about the girl who was, yet again, slumbering in his bed. Most humans who’ve come into contact with a Charmer are sent to perform a task, never remembering who sent them and why they were sent. It was the reason Justice couldn’t recall the woman’s face. The memory would fade so suddenly, yet leave the human compelled to do whatever it was they wanted until the job was done. But Justice remembered the interaction no matter how much the memory tried to elude her. Though she wasn’t able to recall the face of the woman, the fact that she remembered there being a woman was miraculous enough.

He needed to speak to his brothers about the new development but he wasn’t comfortable with having her awaken in his bed again, not knowing where she was. The last panic attack was strong enough to knock her out, which was perplexing enough. In all his years, and there were many, he’d never come into contact with someone so easily gripped by fear and, for some reason, he couldn’t help the nagging feeling that these events were connected somehow.

It all bothered him too deeply. What was it about this girl?

No longer willing to wait for answers, he sought out his brothers. He found them in the kitchen, located on the ground floor of their two story home, engaged in another heated argument.

Trenton was doing everything he could to reassure Roland that Justice posed no danger while Roland seemed to want nothing more than to dispose of the woman.

“Roland,” Trenton warned.

“What do you want?” Roland growled as Charlie entered the kitchen.

Charlie, ignoring Roland’s attitude, responded, “Something isn’t right here.”

“No kidding!” Roland ranted. “You both seem to have lost your minds over this girl who, mind you, was doing the biddings of a demon when you,” he shoved a finger in Charlie’s direction, “met her. You bring her here and prattle off our long list of secrets, putting our lives and hers in danger, then move her in? What the fuck is wrong with you? I don’t know about Trenton over here but I’m not willing to lose my soul over some chick!”

Some chick. It felt wrong to Charlie for Justice to be referred to as ‘some chick,’ making him want to punch Roland. His fists balled at his side as he took a few deep breaths counting down from five. He didn’t know what made him want to defend the girl but that was the least of his worries.

Trenton interjected, cutting Roland off. “What happened?”

Charlie relayed everything that happened at the apartment, leaving nothing out.
